How to choose music for your wedding ceremony

Music plays a huge part in any wedding day so in this post, i'm going to give you some great advice on choosing music for the ceremony.

Your wedding day will be one of the most magical days of your life.  You’ll have invested months of your time into planning everything right down to the perfect last detail.  The wedding ceremony itself is the single most important part of the day and you can use music to not only set the tone for the day but also to express your own individual tastes.

There are many different elements to a civil wedding ceremony that all require music in one form or another, but how many songs do you choose?

1/ Pre-Ceremony

This is the moment where all your friends and family are sat waiting for the bridal party to arrive.  I recommend at least 6 or 7 tracks which you can use to set the tone as your guests will be invited to take their seats at least 20 minutes before the ceremony is due to begin.

2/ The Processional

The all-important song that the bridal party walks down the aisle to.  You could have just one piece of music for everyone or different songs for each person, it’s entirely up to you.

Here are some examples of popular tracks:

  • The Bridal Chorus by Wagner
  • Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel
  • A Thousand Years by The Piano Guys (originally by Christina Perri)
  • Marry Me by Train
  • Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
  • The Glasgow Love Theme from the film Love Actually
  • I’m Kissing You by Des’ree.

These are just a few of the songs I play regularly but it’s important to remember that depending on where you are getting married, inside or outside, it could take you either 15 seconds or 4 minutes to walk down the aisle so you need to choose a song that works with the length of time it takes you to arrive.

3/ The signing of the Register

Once married you’ll then take a moment to sign the register and maybe have photo’s taken with your witnesses.  I always recommend at least 2 to 3 songs minimum depending on how many pictures you’re having taken.  At this point, you can choose romantic songs or maybe something a bit more happy and upbeat.

4/ The Recessional

It’s that all-important moment as you walk back up the aisle as a married couple.   I always recommend you choose a happy upbeat song to celebrate the beginning of the next chapter in your lives together.  Here are some great examples:

  • Beautiful Day by U2
  • Marry You by Bruno Mars
  • You & Me Song by The Wannadies
  • Signed Sealed Delivered (I’m Yours) by Stevie Wonder
  • You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates.

I hope that this has given you some great ideas for your own ceremony.
